Reduction and reproduction of a portrait using basic black and white techniques.

I had the unique opportunity to learn design with a two-week internship at a studio for visual communication.

In that short time (when computers weren’t an integral part of the design process), my learning came by experimenting with the raw materials.

I got an assignment to use a photographic portrait of a girl and reproduce it using only black and white techniques.

The below results are hand-drawn replications with various lighting effects and shading. For the last image, I used German words from a biography to convey the subject’s life in a close-up depiction of her face.
