Case study: Target audience + search behavior
Research – Target audience
Target audience for public libraries is anyone aged 3 to 99. Since Ulm is a University city, its science section is more comprehensive than other public libraries due to the sheer number of students who utilize its facilities.
Field notes – Orientation in libraries
Library visitors exhibit three types of behavior when seeking information:
- They go directly to the inventory and browse;
- They immediately access online catalogues and conduct their search before going to the library shelves;
- Or, visitors approach the information desk and ask personnel.
These three search behaviors are almost evenly distributed at the initial stage. If information is not found immediately, visitors proceed to other means of locating it.
Other visits pertain to returning- or extending loans, administrative tasks, reading news, or accessing information in special archives.
